In the government’s latest status report in the Kilmar Abrego Garcia case yesterday evening, the acting general counsel of the Department of Homeland Security did not provide any substantive updates about the government’s efforts to return Garcia to the United States. Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele said yesterday in an Oval Office meeting with President Trump that he would not return Garcia. (Status report.) (CBS News.)
Judge Indira Talwani (D.Mass.) on Monday stayed a Trump administration policy that revoked parole and work authorizations that the government had previously granted to noncitizens paroled into the United States under parole programs for noncitizens from four countries. (Order.)
Judge William Sessions III (D.Vt.) on Monday enjoined the government from removing an individual detained by immigration authorities, Mohsen Madawi, from the District of Vermont, following Madawi’s habeas petition earlier in the day. Madawi, who helped organize pro-Palestinian demonstrations at Columbia last year, was, according to his lawyers, reportedly “detained by immigration officials on Monday after arriving for an appointment in Vermont that he thought was a step toward becoming a U.S. citizen.” (Order.) (NYT.)
Mary McCord argued that Judge Paula Xinis (D.Md.) in the Garcia case should require senior Trump administration officials to testify about the efforts the administration has made and will make to return Garcia to the United States. (WAPO.)
David Graham analyzed the conflicting statements about Garcia’s status from the Trump administration and Bukele, and argued that there’s no reason the administration couldn’t treat a U.S. citizen in the same manner. (The Atlantic.)
