The Chief Justice on Monday granted the Trump administration’s request for an administrative stay as the Court considers the government’s request to stay a district court decision that had ordered the reinstatement of FTC Commissioner Rebecca Slaughter, whom President Trump fired in March. (Order.) (WaPo.) The administration also asked the Court to treat its application as a petition for a writ of certiorari before judgment and grant the petition. The Supreme Court on Monday stayed a district court order preventing federal immigration officials in Los Angeles and six other California counties from conducting detentive stops based on a series of factors, including apparent race or ethnicity, speaking in Spanish or accented English, or working in a particular type of job. Justice Kavanaugh wrote a concurring opinion, while Justice Sotomayor dissented. (Order and Opinions.) (NYT.)
